I am reviewing Rohan’s long-sleeved Expedition shirt after wearing it every day during my week-long wild camping jaunt to and around the Isle of Wight.

In summer I like to wear sun proof clothing and long sleeves rather than having to reapply sun cream when I’m out walking all day. So I often wear Rohan’s Expedition shirt as it has a UPF 40+ rating.
I walked the Isle of Wight coast path in temperatures of nearly 30 degrees, carrying all my gear and camping wild every night. I wore the shirt every day for a week and found it never looked sweaty and breathed really well. It felt pretty good considering the high temperatures.

The only problem with the shirt was it smelt after a day or so, but it was hot and I was sweating profusely. Because of this, it needed washing everyday. The shirt was easy to wash and didn’t need ironing, I just wrung it out and hung it up to dry on my pack and it looked good again. In the high temperatures I had during the day, I found washing the shirt in cold water and then putting it straight back on worked well. This also kept me cooler for longer.
Rohan say the shirt takes 3 hours to dry, but I found it dried a lot faster than that. In the sun and heat we had, it was dry in an hour or so.
The shirt was brand new prior to starting the walk but I am wearing a discontinued colour. I usually buy discounted Rohan clothing from their sale area. My shirt is size medium and weighed 244g.
Conclusion
Rohan’s Expedition shirt looks smart, doesn’t show the sweat, dries really quickly and doesn’t need ironing.
But because I was camping wild on this trip, a better choice may have been Rohan’s Core Silver T-shirt. The silver means it would not have had the same problem with smelling and needing to be washed everyday. I have used these for years and they have been my top of choice during the summer.
Or you could try the Rohan Equator Shirt, which has Silvadur odour control technology but not the Insect Shield. I’ve reviewed it here. Merino wool T-shirts are also a good choice but I find them too warm for summer and only use them in colder weather.
So if you want to look smart, take the shirt and be prepared to wash it or the T-shirt for an easy, reasonably smell free trip.
What Rohan say about the Expedition shirt:
It’s made from a blend of durable technical fabrics which feels like soft cotton and yet offering robust performance. Our technical Expedition Shirt has also been treated with Insect Shield®, a process which bonds Permethrin into the fabric converting clothing into long-lasting, effective and convenient insect protection.
The relaxed, comfortable fit provides good air circulation around the body. Long sleeves adjust from full length with tabs and the hem provides enough length to tuck in but still looks presentable when worn outside the waistband for greater ventilation.
Dynamic Moisture Control™ provides effective wicking to prevent stickiness, and the UPF 40+ sun protection rating minimises the risk of sunburn.
Finally, there’s a hanging loop and Dryloops™ feature, so you can hang the Expedition Shirt up to dry overnight, wherever you are.
Fabric: 71% polyamide, 29% polyester.
