My photograph of Loch nan Eun in The Great Outdoors magazine

My wild camp photograph has been published in The Great Outdoors Magazine

My tent is in the centre of the picture.

The photograph above, taken with my phone, was deemed good enough to be published in the June 2019 issue of the The Great Outdoors magazine! This photograph was taken during my TGO Challenge in 2018.

The camp

I was camped at about 750 meters, next to Loch nan Eun in perfect conditions. I woke in the early hours and looked out of the tent to a totally still night with beautiful stars. A little while later I saw the most perfect sunrise. I tried to take a picture of it (below), then promptly went back to sleep. The photograph chosen for publication in The Great Outdoors magazine had been taken the evening before, as I set up camp.

I woke to take this picture, then fell straight back to sleep.

This was a perfect wild campsite in May, but it could have been an absolute nightmare if the midgys had been about.

The perfect place to wake up.

I was in no hurry to leave this place and enjoyed an unusually leisurely breakfast and start to the day.

Mornings like this make every wet day worth while

The phone

My Toughphone Defender Pro has been my favourite piece of kit for the last 3 years, ever since I purchased it in 2017. There were a number of reasons for choosing it: it’s waterproof, shock proof, has a 14mp camera and a GPS. I have also been able to load the Ordnance Survey Landranger 1/50,000 maps for the whole of the UK on to it.

So instead of carrying three separate gadgets, I now only carry this phone and have never regretted the decision. It has saved me miles of walking as I’ve been able to place myself instantly every time I switch the phone on, even if I’m just taking a picture. Having it to hand all the time means it’s even been possible to get out of my local woods after getting lost. If I had a separate GPS device, I never would have taken it on this walk! This is ideal for my stress-free lifestyle.

The phone was also incredibly useful during my Land’s End to John O’Groats walk. I needed to make massive changes to my planned route through Wales due to bad weather. This was easy to do because all the mapping was on the phone.

I highly recommend it, and it’s even good enough for magazine photographs!
